What is a Copay?

What is a Copay?

Understanding one of the most common costs in health insurance

If you have health insurance, you may have heard the word copay before. But what exactly does it mean?

A copay, short for copayment, is a set amount you pay for a covered healthcare service. Your insurance plan pays the remaining covered amount according to the terms of your plan.

For example, your health insurance plan might have a $25 copay for a primary care visit. That means you must pay $25 when you receive that service. Your copay can be different depending on the type of care you receive.

How Does a Copay Work?

Your health insurance plan determines how much you pay for different types of covered services.

You might have different copays for:

  • Primary care visits
  • Specialist visits
  • Urgent care
  • Emergency room visits
  • Prescription medications
  • Mental health services
  • Other covered healthcare services

For example:

  • Primary care visit: $25 copay
  • Specialist visit: $50 copay
  • Urgent care: $75 copay

These are just examples. Your actual copays depend on your specific health insurance plan.

When Do You Pay a Copay?

Depending on your insurance plan and the healthcare provider, you may pay your copay:

  • When you check in for your appointment
  • When you receive a service
  • When you pick up a prescription
  • Or when you receive a bill after the service

It’s a good idea to ask your provider what you may owe before receiving care.

Copay vs Deductible: What’s the Difference?

These two terms are easy to mix up.

A copay is usually a set dollar amount you pay for a specific covered service.

A deductible is the amount you may have to pay for covered healthcare services before your insurance begins paying according to your plan’s benefits.

For example, imagine your plan has:

$1,500 deductible
$30 primary care copay

Depending on the plan, you might pay the $30 copay for a covered primary care visit even though you haven’t met your deductible. However, some plans require you to pay the full allowed amount for certain services until you meet your deductible. The details depend on your specific plan.

Does a Copay Count Toward My Deductible?

Not always.

Whether your cpay counts toward your deductible depends on your health insurance plan.

Some plans have copays that apply before the deductible, while others may require you to meet your deductible first for certain services.

Your Summary of Benefits and Coverage or insurance plan documents can tell you how your plan handles copays and deductibles.

What if My Provider is Out of Network?

Your copay may be different or your service may not be covered if you see an out of network provider.

Some insurance plans have seperate benefits for in network and out of network care. Others may not cover out of network services at all, except in certain situations.

Before making an appointment, check whether the provider is in network with your insurance plan.

How Can I Find Out My Copay?

The easiest way to find your cpay is to check your insurance information or contact your insurance company.

You can:

  1. Look at the back of your insurance card.
  2. Check your insurance company’s website or member portal.
  3. Review your Summary of Benefits and Coverage.
  4. Call teh customer service number on teh back of yuor insurance card.
  5. Ask your healthcare provider what they can tell yuo about yuor expected cost.

Remember, your provider may not be able to determine every cost associated with a service. Your insurance company is generally the best source for information about your specific benefits and coverage.
